Get Home Safe
Get Home Safe is an app that my team and I worked on together during our time in the iOS Design Lab at MSU. This program brought students together and guided us through the process of developing an app. Our goal was to design an app that improved the lives of the students on our campus. We chose to focus on campus safety, and how we could improve it with an app. While Get Home Safe was never completely finished or launched, I learned a ton during this process.
We developed this user flow by researching MSU students. By conducting a card sort we were able to create an optimal information architecture based on the intuition of our actual users. We also conducted a semi-structured interview to gain insight on features and terminology that is relevant to the student population.
We also had in interview with MSU Police Officer Jessica Mitchell to get a deeper understanding of what systems were currently in place and to ensure that our concept would be relevant, safe, and in line with the practices of the local police department.
After we discussed the results of our research, the team sat down to figure out what features we wanted to include. We thought having the map showing the incidents should be the home screen so students could easily map their routes and avoid incidents.
The sketches to the left show the initial ideas for the layout & navigation.
The next step was to build out the look and basic navigation into Adobe XD so we could experiment with the features. Above you can see screenshots of the entirety of the prototype with and without navigation. The button above will take you to a screen where you can explore the prototype.
Our blue gradient color scheme encourages calm feelings, since Get Home Safe would most likely be used in emergencies. The bright warm colors on the mild, moderate & severe events capture the users attention and promote a sense of urgency. The rounded features are thought to have a friendly/trustworthy appearance, and this was important to us since our app focused on safety. This was the first draft of the prototype, so the look was definitely more extreme then the finished product.
Below is a sample of the final look of get home safe that was presented to apple executives at the end of the program. Due to the nature of the program, we didn’t continue work on this project, but it was an incredible learning experience.
